How To Avoid Getting Cavities

February 23, 2022

While cavities are very common, they are not pleasant. These little holes in your teeth are the result of tooth decay. They can lead to bigger problems and require fillings in order to treat them. The best thing to do is avoid cavities altogether. Here are some ways you can do so.

Brush and Floss Each Day

Even when you're not at the
dentist, you can take care of your oral health. If you brush your teeth multiple times a day, it will go a long way toward avoiding cavities. Brushing will get sugar, germs, and other residue off of your teeth, keeping them clean. Meanwhile, flossing will get debris that is caught in the little places your toothbrush can't reach.

Go to the Dentist

You should go to the dentist about twice a year. According to the CDC, in 2019, 64.9% of adults over 18 stated they'd gone to the dentist in the past year. When you go to the dentist, they can clean your teeth with specialized tools you don't have access to. Trained dental hygienists will do the cleaning and give you advice on how to care for your teeth better at home. Then your dentist will do an exam, checking for any problems in your mouth. By going to the dentist, you can catch problems early on. If you don't have cavities, they can help you keep it that way.

Avoid Sugary Snacks

Sugar is the ideal food for the bacteria that cause cavities. While brushing your teeth helps a lot, not introducing sugar is a good way to avoid getting cavities at all. Stick to healthy snacks that contain a lot of vitamins and minerals. These will both help you avoid cavities and make your body stronger.

Drink Water

You should drink water for your overall health, but water can also help you avoid cavities. Water can wash away the debris of the food you just ate, moving it before the bacteria in your mouth can get to it. While it is not a substitute for brushing your teeth, water does help your mouth stay clean and healthy.

Nobody wants to have cavities. They can be painful and getting them filled is a frustrating process. If you want to avoid getting cavities, talk to your dentist and follow the tips listed above. This will get you started on the right path.
