How to Explain Tooth Cleaning to Your Children

Mar 10, 2023

Do your children understand the importance of dental hygiene? While explaining tooth cleaning might not be the easiest thing in the world, young kids need to have this knowledge. These tips can help make the process less complicated and more enjoyable for both you and your children.

Talk About Basic Dental Hygiene

First, make sure they have a basic understanding of the idea. Why do you brush your teeth? Explain how tooth cleaning keeps teeth healthy and prevents cavities, which they don't want to have. According to the CDC, over 10% of children age five all the way to 19 have untreated dental caries. Unfortunately, many children aren't equipped with the knowledge to prevent cavities or even recognize them when they happen. Teach your child about the basics of dental hygiene, including the need to brush twice a day and floss daily and how cavities form.

Demonstrate Tooth Cleaning

Once you've discussed the basics, demonstrate how to properly brush and floss teeth. Let your child watch as you brush your own teeth and talk about the techniques you're using. You can also let them help out by providing them with their own toothbrush and showing them proper use. It's also vital to develop a habit of tooth cleaning. For instance, before or after breakfast, have your child brush their teeth for two minutes. A sand timer is also a great tool to help them learn the importance of brushing for the right amount of time.

Let Them Choose Their Brushes and Toothpaste

Allowing your children to choose their own toothbrush and toothpaste can make them excited about brushing. Let them pick out a brush based on its color, design, or character pattern. Explain that it's important to select one with soft bristles and an appropriate size for their mouth. Also, let them select a type of toothpaste they enjoy so that the experience of brushing is more enjoyable. Be sure to check the label for fluoride content and age-appropriate ingredients.

Make It Fun

Finally, make tooth cleaning a fun activity by playing music while they brush or letting them use an electric toothbrush. You can also let them keep track of their brushing on a chart or award them with stickers for each successful brush. Incorporating these fun elements will turn tooth cleaning into an activity they look forward to.

Explaining the importance of tooth cleaning can be challenging, but following these steps can make it easier and more enjoyable. Taking the time to explain dental hygiene to your children will help them understand why it's important for their health and benefit them in the long term.
